PET HAIR on furniture is inevitable when you own a furry four-legged friend and although many of us simply learn to live with it - are there really ways of keeping on top of it?
Deep-cleaning carpets and furniture with a hoover or hair removal brush will only get you so far and soon enough you'll have to do it all over again. With pet hair falling on most surfaces in any cat or dog-loving home, knowing how to tackle it for longer is the key to a cleaner property.
Owners of furry pets have turned to their feline and canine companions more than ever during these testing times - and while many households had strict pet no-go zones before lockdown, a lot of us have broken all boundaries and let our pets roam free with no furniture off-limits.
Whether your dog loves a snooze on the sofa or your cat is now a permanent feature on the expensive rug in your bedroom, a build-up of fur on our beloved furnishings is often overlooked.
With recent data stating that three in 10 people share a bed with their pet, hidden dirt and grime in our pets' fur is creeping into our bedrooms more than ever.
Anti-fur fabrics
To keep beds free from nasty surprises brought in by our pets, experts recommend opting for tightly-weaved fabrics when choosing bedding.
Less space between the fibres creates a smoother and tightly woven layer which will block hair, dirt and bugs seeping in through micro-gaps in our sheets.
A general rule of thumb is the smoother the fabric feels, the better it will repel pet hair from our beloved animal companions.
Easy-wash
Easily washable fabrics are also essential when looking to repel pet hair on furniture.
If possible, we recommend putting your bedding into your dryer for a couple of minutes on a cool setting.
This will loosen the hair from any thick material, pulling it into the filter, and ultimately removing it from your bedding.
The same applies to all materials used on furnishings - especially soft furnishings like sofas, armchairs, cushions and rugs.
How to extract pet hair from furnishings
You can vacuum clean your bedding with a brush attachment or you can even use a rubber pet hair removal tool as the rubber will collect the remaining hair naturally.
Finish off the process by wiping your bedding with a damp sponge to bunch up any fur that still remains and you should be left with a dog hair-free bed.
Or just insist Fido remains in his bed not yours...
